Composition is key when mastering the art of a good flatlay.

If you are like me and a little Instagram Addict you will have come across a new trend, the flatlay.
It's a classic, simple and chic way to show of all your favourite items in one creative picture.
Fashion Bloggers such as Lydia Elise Millen or Sinead Crowe have mastered and perfected the art of the flatlays and are a huge inspiration when creating my own.

Good flatlays are carefully assembled and placed together in a stylish and yet effortless way, but how do they do it? What are the secrets? Find here 5 Top Tips to create the perfect flatlays.

1. Pick a basic background

Pick a background that won't distract the products, but also complements them. Less is more in this case, a simple table or perhaps a wooden floor can be amazing.
Shaggy or fluffy rugs might seem overpowering but can look super cute with the right products.

I personally am a huge fan of the marble background, it doesn't just look super chic but also compliments my favourite items.

2. Natural lighting

Number 1 rule, always shoot in natural lighting. Either morning or afternoons for a softer light and try to avoid harsh sunlight to eliminate shadows. Experiment around the house and try to find the best place.

I always shoot next to a window, for the correct amount of light to shine onto my flatlay.

3. Leave Space

A cluttered flatlay is distracting and not at all attractive, by leaving a bit of space between the products will allow for a more productive flatlay. It's also important to not leave too much space, as that would have the same negative effect as a cluttered one. Play around with products and compositions to find the right style for you.

4. Stick to a consistent theme

Too many different items can be confusing and misleading. Try to show with one theme what you are trying to say - pampering day at home, today's beauty products or what's in your bag.
It's far too overwhelming having too many different products, once again less is more in this case too.

5. Birds eye view

Flatlays are all about shooting from above, so if the product is on the floor it's necessary to stand up and take the picture from above. If it's on a table you may need to consider standing on a chair for maxim success on creating that perfect birds eye view.

There are many accounts on Instagram dedicated to show the best flatlays and often repost the ones they like the most, by using the hashtag #flatlay or tagging @flatlays you may be in a chance of being featured!

All my images are taken with the Olympus PEN E-PL7 and edited with VSCO Cam, that is free for both android and iPhone users.
