My love for travelling, fear of flying and recent experience with Ryan Air.

I used my placement year not only to gain valuable experience into the big world of being an adult with a full-time job but also to travel around Europe. My boyfriend and I started our travels with a 7-day trip to Gran Canary that involved safari tours, camel rides and long beach days. We have since then also travelled to Berlin, Paris, Rome, Milan, Düsseldorf and Cologne. Our last trip before we go back to University for our final year will be in September and our location is as of yet still undecided. We love a good last-minute deal and often let us be surprised by what deals are around and make our decision based on that.

My favourite Gingham pieces:

Wanderlust

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” ―  Susan Sontag

Every week I add a new place to my travelling list. It continues to grow, just like my eagerness to leave London immediately again. I have so many new beaches to see, food to eat and pictures to take. But being a student on a limited budget doesn't make travelling everywhere any easier. Nor does a fear of flying.

Travelling and flying go hand in hand. Imagine wanting to explore Australia but your fear stops you from booking those tickets and stepping on the plane - quite lame, right? I always tell my friends to not let their fear get in the way of anything and I do try to stick to it myself. But the thought of being on a plane for so long is scary. My longest flight has been just over 3 hours - good conditions to fly which made it easy and no turbulences. However, our trip to D
üsseldorf was anything but easy and that was only 50mins long. There is always that one person who has a panic attack and in that case, it was me. As much as I love to see the other side of the world, but until my fear vanishes those places will stay at the bottom of my list.

Anyone have any tips on how to cope on long distance flights?

My recent experience with RyanAir

Being a scared passenger means I feel much more comfortable flying with company to keep me at ease. I have flown alone in the past and hated it. However, on my last trip to Düsseldorf, our outbound flight wasn't the most comfortable one for me. So consequently I was a little bit more worried on the return flight. Everyone knows RyanAir is a low-budget company and our flights were only £30 return which is decent. But the small issue is that if you want to be able to sit next to each other you will be needing to pay a small fee in order to not be seated away from your partner. We paid £4 for our seats next to each other, despite an empty row on the flight to Germany. On the way back the online check-in didn't allow us to once again sit next to each other and my boyfriend accidentally ticked the wrong box which meant we had different seat rows. Once we departed the flight we both noticed many empty rows and many in which only was a person was sitting in the middle of the row. They purposely gave seats away to single people in the middle of the row and then make people pay a fee to sit next to each other.

Considering the many empty rows we asked a flight attendant if we could move seats and sit next to each other. Mainly because the thought of me sitting alone was more than just a little scary. Yet the lady I had asked forbid my boyfriend to leave his seat and only allowed me to move around. Despite me having mentioned that I have difficulties flying - Anyone else find it odd how I was allowed to move and he wasn't? Anyway, I then asked why we had to pay to be seated next to each other despite at least 7 empty rows and instead of answering my question she walked away. My fear grew bigger so my boyfriend asked another flight attendant who without any issues allowed us to move our seats and sit next to each other in an empty row.

Luckily it all got sorted in the end, but it did change my outlook on the company slightly.

  1. How awful that the first flight attendant was so awful , I am glad the second one was more understanding. Have you tried deep breathing and meditation to calm you before a flight? It might help.

  2. I know exactly what you mean. I hate flying... but it's the only way until someone invents a Star Trek type mode of transport and it's a case of 'Beam me up!' Great post!

  3. I'm currently in Budapest, having taken a 1hr30 minute flight with Ryanair from Berlin. I've used the company quite a few times and never had any issues - but I've always travelled as a solo traveller with them, so it doesn't bother me who I sit next to and where. I can completely understand how your fear of flying can be heightened with turbulence, rude air stewards and uncomfy surroundings though x

  4. I think if you have difficulties flying you're better of going with someone like BA or a better airline as the attendants are more likely to pay attention. I'd always tell someone that you have problems flying before take off so they can be aware to look out for you x
