Oversharing is not caring - the negatives of oversharing

As a blogger, you always feel the need to be relatable. You want people to read your post and feel the same, yet at the same time, you want to maintain some sort of a privacy. I personally am not someone who you would consider an 'open book'. Most of my friends know the superficial problems; Instagram follow/unfollow thing or people not saying thank you for my help. However, whenever it comes to my blog I feel like writing down every single problem I have, I want to share what I'm going through and find like-minded people to talk to.

It's all different these days, I know what my old neighbour had for breakfast despite not having talked to them for years and just saw my old BFF get in her fifth relationship since January. Social Media has changed the world.

The main issue with oversharing on social media is that other people get dragged into your dirty laundry. As much as I want to put everything I'm going through on my blog I won't be able to do so without hurting others along the way. Writing about what I feel is like my therapy; shopping makes me feel good for some hours, but with writing about I feel a sense of relieve.

We need to think to ourselves: "At what point am I invading someone else's privacy?". Yes, sharing your problems has become much more socially acceptable. But if the problems are related to a relationship you are not only publicising your issues, but also the ones from the other person. Whether it's a sister, friend or love relationship. We can't treat our social media like a diary, certain things should be left unsaid. Just because I don't air all my shit online doesn't mean that my life is just rainbows and unicorns. We all have our shit behind our filtered feeds and cute tweets; we might all be more messed up than we show on social media.

Social Media is a permanent record of what we have done - the internet doesn't forget.

I want to tell my story, I want to show my personality and be that 'relatable blogger', but it's not always my story to tell. I can't hurt people for my own satisfaction or lose relationships over this. Before you share anything on social media think of the consequences, could this potentially come back and bite you in the bum? We can still be relatable and authentic bloggers without putting all our issues on social media. But remember that just because we make our lives look so glamorous, it doesn't mean everything is as amazing as it seems. Don't compare your life to the one of a filtered blogger's Instagram feed.

How much is too much I wonder? There is no real answer, only a personal preference. But always remember that it's not always your dirty laundry you are airing on social media.

    1. agree, I see too many people regret sharing too much and there is no point in removing it because the damage is already done x

  2. As much as I love reading the blog posts of bloggers who like to share a lot, it is not something I like to do myself.
For example when you break up with an ex, or if you happen to have a fallout with friends, it is weird to realise that they are all over your blog and social media.
    I love your outfit :) Dani x

    1. I agree, whenever I have an argument with someone I feel like writing about it, but at the end of the day it only causes more harm! Thank you :)

  3. Interesting, it's not something that comes up for us with our food blog as it is all about the food. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable airing our arguments or intimate details of our relationship.

  4. I totally agree with the vibe of this post! Its a struggle as a blogger to know how to toe the line, so to speak. I know that when I share my journeys with certain situations, I feel a release, but theres some things I keep as private too, just for my own wellbeing xxx

  5. I think about this a lot too. It's funny how much we know about each other yet know nothing really. Finding the balance of being the relatable blogger and still being inspirational enough to get more people to want read your blog or follow your insta. It's such a fine line.

  6. I agree, oversharing can get really annoying at times especially when you've already read it or seen it.

  7. Just now, I have found real comfort in writing my blog... we are going through a string of miscarriages and it's important that people know how I feel before I go back to work again properly. I'm very careful to keep hurtful things off social media, but I can't say that the rest of my friends are as careful, so I can totally appreciate the problem with oversharing...

  11. It's strange because naturally I am a very private person, which might seem ironic considering I post about my personal life on my blog. I think that social media and blogs have made it easier to share but like you said you don't want to drag people through your dirty laundry. I am very conscious of this, especially when it comes to exes so I use code names. Another well written post. Btw I am seriously crushing on your boots but I like the pink sonar pointed toe over the knee pair from public desire you liked below before. I am seriously thinking about buying these, they would go with so many of my outfits. Plus it would give you some commission too xx

  12. I totally understand why some bloggers do share everything on the internet as sometimes the challenges they face and overcome, can also help their readers, but I've never been that person to share the ins-and-outs of my life. ♥

  13. I love these photos, your outfit looks gorgeous! I can definitely relate on this, once I start writing I suddenly want to share everything even though I'm usually quite a private person. I'm learning to just do me and share what I want and am always conscious to keep other people out of it x
